Gunasekhar National Film Award winner has donned the director’s hat for the 13th time, and expectations are high considering he’s fresh from the super success of Rudhramadevi. The film has a good chance as there are no big releases lined up right now, so a solid opening can be expected from Samantha’s mythological drama. Initially, predictions were made of up to 20 crores but as we got closer to the release date, it seemed like the buzz was missing. Be it good music or the trailer not being as powerful as compared to the teaser, Samantha’s big film hasn’t made a huge impact ahead of its release.
As per the latest trade update, Shaakuntalam has finally gone past the 1 crore mark at the Indian box office as its advance booking collection now stands at 1.35 crores gross (excluding blocked seats) for day 1. Of course, it’s not up to the mark but still, it’s a good sign that the film has finally shown some movement in ticket sales after moving at a snail’s pace yesterday. The credit should also be given to reduced average ticket prices for all formats. Earlier, the rates were very high.
Shakuntalam has sold more than 40 thousand tickets across the country for the first day. With just one day left for the release, the final count should cross the 2 crore mark. After that everything will depend on the word of mouth. If the content is liked by the audience, then the film has a good chance of getting a strong opening at the box office.
